Psalm 8

I started the SOAP method of Bible study in the middle of Mark and Psalms. I am now going to add my notes from my written journal for the beginning chapters of both books so that the entire books are in this blog.

Psalm 8

Observation

  • God has created everything. It reveals His glory because it is all so amazing and so beyond our comprehension
  • Children and infants through their praise will silence their enemies
  • God is mindful of us because He crowned uswith glory and honor
  • God made it all and put it in mans hands, we are to treat it with respect just as we are to honor God

Application

God made us and valuesus, we are special to Him and need to respect ourselves and love ourselves just as we are so that He can make changes in our lives

Prayer

Lord, your majesty amazes me, your strength strengthens me, your creation makes me aware of you and all you do. You are apart of everything and in all of us. My praise be worthy to you.

Prayer

Open my heart so I can understand your Word

Summary
  • David asks for God's protection from enemies pursuinghim
  • says if he has done evil then God should allow his enemies to capture hima and trample him to the ground
  • the Lord rises up in anger against enemies, He judges people on their righteousness and integrity
  • God protects but also judges and shows his wrath
  • describes the trouble evil brings us
  • thanks and praise

Application

Evil and sin continue to grow and can overtake our lives. God an help us overcome anything, we need to come to Him with all aspects of our lives.

Prayer

Help me to see and hear more clealy what God is trying to tell me

Summary
  • Jesus speaks again of betrayal and riding after three days
  • James and John ask to be able to sit at His right and left. He tells them that it is not for him to grant this
  • Key verse v.45 Jesus tells them He did not come to be served but to serve and give his life as a ransom for many.
  • Jesus heals the blind man,


Application

We are to serve others and to sacrifice ourselves

Prayer

Make me more childlike in my spirit and trust in God. Help me grow and mature in my faith as a child grows

Summary
  • the Pharisees ask Jesus about divorce. Jesus reponds that God intended manand women to become one
  • Jesus tells the disciples to let the little children come to him
  • Jesus tells the man to sell everything he has



Application

Little children accept things easily and without question. The rich man cannot serve God and money at the same time, so we should strive to be more childlike in our faith

Prayer

Help Effie's family in this time of grief, please help them come closer to you

Summary
  • David asks God to be merciful to him and to heal his pain an anguish
  • David is worn out from his weeping and sorrow
  • David tells those who do evil to go away from him because the Lord has heard his cry for mercy and He will answer him
  • Key Verse v.3 my soul is in anguish. How long, O Lord, how long? David prays to God asking how long he must wait for relief


Application

The key verse shows us that we may have to endure sorrow for a long time. But then in verse 9 we can be comforted by knwing God hears our cries

Mark 9:2-32

Prayer

Give me the encouragement I need to grow my faith and gain wisdom and understanding

Summary
  • Jesus is transfigured, God speaks to Peter, James, and John telling them to listento Jesus. Key verse v.7 "This is my Son, whom Ilove, Listen to Him!"
  • Jesus tells them to say nothing until the Son of Man rises from the dead. They did not know what this meant
  • Jesus quotes prophecy saying the Son of Man must suffer much and be rejected
  • Key Verse v.23 Jesus says"Everything is possible for him who believes" This was said to the father of the demon possessed boy. The father also asked Jesus to help him overcome his unbelief
  • Jesus again tells his disciples what will happen - betrayal, killed, rise after three days. But they do not uderstand

Application

We need to pray for our needs and believe that everything is possible. We need to pray for help to overcome our unbelief

Prayer

Show me how I am being sinful

Summary
  • Jesus tells them that he is the greatest but not by putting the focus on Himself
  • Jesus tells them not to worry about what others are doing in His name, for there is some good in it
  • Jesus tells them several times to cut out sin from their lives




Application

Pray for sin o be revealed and repent from it

Prayer

Open my heart and show me what I need to learn

Summary
  • key verse v.3 - pray and wait, theLord will answer
  • David is praying and waiting for the Lord in expectation
  • describes how God is against evil and destroys them
  • David will worship the Lord and asks Him to lead
  • describes sinfultraits and that God will banish them
  • prayer for God to protect those who take refuge and rejoice in Him

Application

In all things, good and bad, weare to pray. When we pray, we are to wait for God's answer, He will answer.

Prayer

Help me to build and maintain routines for my home and family so that I can find more time to be with you Lord in a meaningful way

Summary

  • Jesus feeds the people with seven loaves and a few fish
  • thePharisees test him, asking for a sign frm heaven. Jesus tells them there will be no sign
  • Parable of the yeast - leavenis a small lump from a batch of dough and can rise a new batch of dough that has no yeast. The lesson is that a little can corrupt a large amount
  • Jesus heals a blind man, a gradual healing as he covered his eyes twice
  • Jesus asks his disciples "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered that he was Christ the Messiah
  • Jesus starts to teach about rising after 3 days
  • Key vers,v.34 take up his cross and follow me. Why? v.35 his life will be saved, v.36-37 a man cannot exchange his soul for wordly things v.38 if we are ashamed of or deny him he will be ashamed of us

Application

Find ways to beter follow Christ. We are to deny ourselves so that we can freely take up our cross

Prayer

Help me calm my anger, help me find wys to cool my temper. Giveme patience while I try to get our home in order.

Summary
  • David is angry at others for not seeking God
  • David takes his anger to God by praying to Him
  • Key Verse, v.4 in your anger do not sin ... search your hearts and be silent

Application

Filling my heart with God's joy will ease my temper. Thank you God for answering my prayer and speaking to my heart.

Prayer

Help me to discover devotional practices and traditions that are meaningful and truly praise God

Summary

  • the Pharisees questioned the disciples practice of eating before washing hands, which is a Jewish tradition
  • Jesus responded witha prophecy from Isaiah saying they are disobeying God by following traditions
  • Jesus said it is what comes out of a man that makes him unclean. Sin comes from your heart
  • Jesus sends out the demon from a Greek womans daughter
  • Jesus heals a man who was deaf and could barely talk

Application

Look at religious traditions and determine if they are truly spiritual or if it is a tradition of men that will get in th way of obedience to God

Prayer

God, pleas refresh my spirit so I can quickly get our home in order. Help me with the committment to more Bible reading and study

Summary
  • Jesus sends the 12 out in pairs, they were to take nothing with them. They preached that people should repent
  • story of Herodias' daughter asking Herod for John the Baptist's head
  • Jesus invites the 12 to a quiet place for some rest, but there is a large crowd. Jesus saw them as sheep that need a shephard

Application

Jesus saw the need for them to go to a quiet place for rest. Every day I need to find quiet time for myself to have spiritual rest and renewal.

Psalm 3

Prayer

My troubles are generally time and schedule related which cause me to lose my patience. I pray for help in these areas.

Summary

The progression of the Psalm- Despair, realizing God's protection, calmness & peace, God's deliverance from enemies, God's blessing

David cries his despair to God and receives peace and has no fear.

Psalm 2

Prayer

God is in control of all, including world leaders. Help them to be faithful to you and guide them to your will

Summary

- kings of the earth try to stand against the Lord and the Anointed one - translated Messiah
- The Lord's on will rule over all nations
- the kings ofthe earth are warned
- Key verse - serve theLord with fearand rejoice with trembling
- also the lst line - Blessed are those who take refuge in Him.

Application

Psalm 2 seems to be written to political figures until you read the last line. We are blessed when we seek Godas our protector. Seek God continually and for everything.

Mark 4:35-6:6

Mark 4:35 through Mark 5, to Mark 6:6

Prayer
I am most afraid of something happening to my husband. I need to pu my trust in God to protect him and to have faith that I will have the strength to face anything.

Summary

  • Jesus calms the storm
  • Jesus gave the legion of evil spirits permission to leave the man and enter a herd of pigs
  • a woman touchd Jesus and because of her faith she was healed
  • Jesus heals Jairus' daughter
  • The theme is a lackof faith produces fear except for the demons. They were fearful because they knew Jesus could destroy them

Application

Increasing your faith will decrease your fears

Prayer

My chaotic routines are a barrier to finding peace. Help me to create meaningful routines for my family so that they also guide them to you.

Summary

Parable of the sowing seeds

  • the seed is the Word
  • Path - satan comes and takes away the Word
  • Rocky Places - hear the Word but have no root and they quickly fall away
  • Thorns - evil things and desires of the world choke out the Word
  • Good Soil - hear the Word, accept it, produce fruitfully

Parable of the Lamp

  • the light is to be in the open, we see by the light
  • we open ourselves to be able to see

Parable of the growing seed

  • this is about the Kingdom of God
  • a seed is planted, it continues to grow, it ripens, and is ready to be harvested
  • our spiritual growth can be related to the growth of a seed

Parable of the mustard seed

  • the smallest seed can become the largest plant
  • something small and insignificant can grow and develop to large proportions

Application

We need to be rooted in the Word to grow spiritually. Sharing even the smallest bit of Gospel can grow in someone's heart.

- people & Pharisees questioning and critizing Jesus' actions, he is doing things against law and custom
- Key verse 2:27-28 Jesus if Lord even on the Sabbath
- Jesus was distressed with their stubborn hearts
- Key verse 3:35 whoever doesGod's will is part of Jesus' family

Get into the Word and do God's will

Jesus is compassionate, he healed leprosy and paralysis. Key verse 2:17 Jesus came to call the sinners

Look for opportunities to show compassion

- Jesus calls his disiples to follow him, they obey immediately
- Jesus teaches with authority
- Jesus orders evil spirits, they obey him
- Jesus heals
- Jesus prays Key Verse v.35 Jesus goes to a quiet place alone to pray
- He is interrupted and his priorities are then to preach

Application

Make prayer your priority, but expect to be interuppted. Deal with it and return to prayer.

Help me find the strength and encouragement to fight temptation and be able to get deeper into the Word

Summary

- a reminder of the prophecies fulfilled in Jesus
- John the Babtist emphasizing his power
- Jesus baptizes with the Holy Spirit
- Account of Jesus' baptism v. 10-11 Key verses showing the Trinity of Jesus the man, Holy Spirit descending, and God speaking
- Jesus is tempted by Satan
- Jesus tellsus to repent and believe the Good News

Application

Be encouraged because you have the power of the Holy Spirit to help you resist temptation. You have to allow the Holy Spirit to help you.

Lord, Please make prayer and being in the Word a habit so that I can find the time to be quiet with You.

Key Verse is verse 2 But they delight in doing everything the Lord wants;
day and night they think about his law.


Contrast is with sinners, they will perish

Trees are the metaphor, wicke are chaff
- trees are rooted and yild fruit
- chaff simply blows away

Application

Get in the Word, develop devotional habits and I will be blessed and find joy in being closer to God
